A Mini Story

Gear Up

A portrait of British motorsport culture.

Synopsis

Gear Up is a documentary exploring the culture of British motorsport through the world of Mini racing. Following two young drivers navigating the demanding path of competitive racing, the film reveals the discipline, community and heritage that exist behind every lap. From karting to simulator practice to historic circuits like Silverstone and Goodwood, the story captures a generation learning their craft. More than a racing film, Gear Up is a portrait of the people who make the sport possible — families, mechanics, teammates and fans. Because in racing, no one arrives alone.

The Story Behind The Film

The idea for Gear Up began with a simple observation: behind every driver is an entire community. Over months of filming across paddocks, garages and circuits, the project set out to document not just the racing itself, but also the quieter moments that define grassroots motorsport: preparation in the garage, long practice sessions, and the people working behind the scenes. Produced independently, the film seeks to capture the authenticity of the Mini racing scene and the culture surrounding it. Rather than focusing only on competition, Gear Up looks at progression, mentorship and the relationships that sustain the sport. It is a film about beginnings, perseverance, and the communities that keep racing alive.

The Drivers

Ollie and Louis Birkett in the paddock

Ollie Birkett

Louis Birkett

Racing alongside his brother, Louis brings his own perspective and approach to the sport. Together, the two drivers reflect a shared journey of learning, improving and competing.

Our Vision

Gear Up was created to document and celebrate the culture of motorsport. At its heart, the film explores how racing is sustained not only by drivers, but also by the communities around them — families, teams, organisers and fans who dedicate their time and passion to the sport. By capturing this environment, the film aims to introduce new audiences to the world of club racing while recognising the heritage that shaped it. Because racing has always been more than what happens on the track.
